how to process tough emotions effectively

How Anger Management Counseling Can Help

Learn to understand your anger. All emotions have a function of communicating needs. Anger is an emotion that serves the purpose of protecting us and indicating to us that something is wrong. It is often used a defense or protection to keep us safe when we experience difficult emotions.

Anger is a secondary emotion, which means, it protects us from feeling more painful emotions underneath, like sadness, hurt, or longing. Once you learn to understand your triggers, you can access the emotion underneath the anger and communicate more effectively.

While anger serves a protective role, reactions to the anger might be dysfunctional in your life. There is nothing wrong with anger itself, however, behavioral reactions to it can cause disruption in relationships and throughout your life.

What to Expect in Therapy for Anger

Understanding your anger is extremely important in your ability to respond to it differently. In anger management counseling, your therapist will help you to identify triggers, thoughts, emotions, and reactive behavior patterns.

This work will be judgment free, because I know how hard dealing with anger and behaviors we regret can be.

While specific plans are customized for each individual, in general, treatment includes the following tasks:

  • Identify achievable goals for treatment together with your therapist
  • Review your history in relationships and in dealing with anger
  • Learn skills to break patterns of negative thoughts, process emotions, and be present
  • Develop clarity on the things that are most important to you
  • Learn and practice coping skills to manage anger moving forward

Discovering the function of your anger and finding new ways to cope will empower you to respond differently and be heard by others more clearly.

We will help you get back in the driver’s seat, instead of having angry outbursts running your life.
